Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge form and conventions of real media products?

In our music video we have decided to do a narrative performance based piece  that looks at all the conventions of a famous music video. Firstly the style we have attempted to interpret is the R&B style with costumes, props and a smooth flow to the video that relates to the lyrics and style of the song. throughout we have looked at especially the narrative in the video as in most R&B music videos the narrative plays a large part. We decided to create a narrative that would relate again to the lyrics in the song and that would make people want to watch; has an effect on them. Romance is key here as R&B conventions are often related to the idea of love. This leads us onto the props and colour scheme, the costumes we have used are meant to look glamours yet natural to make people believe that the story is real. The colour scheme for example the leopard printed coat and leather jackets are to make the characters have a specific style and personality as often peoples first impressions tell alot about a person. We also decided to use the colour scheme for the climax of the video using a red car to resemble danger against the contrasting blue colours of the character.

Development, we developed this original idea when shooting as we felt often some of our best ideas came through working from the original. We developed the video to look professional and to present a specific story to the audience. We decided that developing our ideas would come through the process of using different shots places and lyrics, often the ideas become spontaneous or in the momment as we tried to think of obvious signals to the audience of representing the conventions of the R&B style as we obviously could tell them in words.

However, our music video has a real impact on the audience and has perhaps a storyline that they can relate to, this effects and attaches the audiences emotion to the video which i think can challenge the coventions of real media products.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?
We used various media technology within the construction of our video, for example the online blog where we could post our progression, updates and photographs. Through the blog either one of us could could update it at any time. Other technology we used included digital camera, we used this to take photographs of the artist to create our ancillary texts.

We also used final cut express to edit and capture our video footage, by using this our editing techniques were of a professional quality. When creating our digipack we used a variety of Adobe Photoshop and Gimp to create our pieces to a good quality. For research and evaluation we used facebook to upload our video and used public interaction to asses our video.

Finally the internet and the iMacs, they are a large part of the media technology we used as without them the creation would not of been possible as we would not of been able to find our artist, download their music and create this blog.

What have you learnt from your audience feeback?

Throughout our work we have constantly been updated by any audience feedback, we have done this by creating questionaires, posting them on facebook and giving them out to people. We have also used our audience through facebook as youtube as people have liked and commented our video rough cut and have told us in person what they have though and anything they think we could improve on. We aslo had verbal feedback throughout via caroline and other students.

We feel that we have developed any feedback people had given us, for example, in our rough cut video people did not understand how we got to the carcrash scene so therfore the lesson after we went and filmed this extra scene to be added to our video. We also took our advice from our audience when they requested more high angle shots, so we filmed more shots for the beggining sequence at a hight angle.

In our ancillary products we recieved verbal feedback from Caroline which lead us to improving them and making them look more proffesional. We also had students look at them while we were editing who gave us feedback and their thoughts on our ideas so far.

Change of plan with this pannel piece. I did not feel it was strong enough to be the front cover so i have created a 'thank you' message pannel to be within the digipack instead. i feel this is a stronger outcome of this part and fits in much better. I think for a front cover pannel we need a strong image.

Textual Annalysis - Digipack.

The Digi-pack is the exceptional alternative to standard jewel box packaging. Made mostly from thick card, the digi-pack is virtually shatterproof and allows great graphic display. Originally used for the album packaging of leading musicians, the digi-pack and digi-pack family are now priced reasonably enough to be used for any CD or DVD project. The digi-pack is an extremely versatile packaging.

The digipack i have decided to analyze is Alicia Keys greatest hits.

On the front of the digipack is an image of the artist, her name and the title of the album. The artist has been styled in a glamourous dress and is looking happy. This is conventional for a female r&b artist. The text is in a gold cover that conects with the dress and the text inside the cover. Her name is in a bolder text which draws attention to the artist.

On the inside of the digipack there is 3 pannels, the first pannel there is text that is about her, the rights of the music and a message to her fans. Underneath the text there is an image of Alicia Keys, this attracts both female and male audiences as she is attractive but a role model. Also the image shows that she is the artist of the cd and the main focul point. The context of the image shows her to be glamourous and beautiful. Key r&b factors of a Digipack.
Next to the first pannels is two CD parts with a background image.

Textual analysis - DIGIPAK

Rihanna_FB_Giveaway2.jpg
This is female singer Rihanna's Digipak, there are 5 panes on the CD including 2 CDs. The first pane is a close up shot of Rihanna's face, using the colour red with her hair and lips as the attracting part especially to a male audience there is a sense of beauty about her.  the shot allows the audience to see the sensitivity of the singer and to also be able to get up close and personal with her. giving you a chance to see the star in an angle you would usual be able to see. The back pane is the same picture but with a white boarder and the same white minimal text of her name and the name of the album placed at the top and bottom of the cover. The inside 3 panes of the digipak show a combined picture of the star lay on red roses keeping with the theme. they have placed her in a white dress perhaps to suggest purity and beauty almost a princess figure. Rihanna  has an website as well as myspace and adverts. The inside picture is dramatic get classy, the picture relates to her music video and helps to promote the single as well as the album. The importance of the colors and scene setting allows the audience to see her as a person to perhaps look up to

Audience Feedback

We created a questionnaire and gave it out to people in our media class to get a critical response from another media students point of view, as we already have feedback from the general public audience via Facebook..

Over all people enjoyed our video, we had comments like"very entertaining and easy to follow". The scenes that people enjoyed the most were 'flashbacks', 'car crash', 'reverse shots'. The main thing that people felt that needed improving is the link to where we are to car crash scene and also people felt the reverse shots would be better if they were slower. The majority of people felt that the miming within our video was ok and did not need improving, however we feel that we need to improve the beginning of the rap if we have enough time. The students suggested that we could use more low and high angle shots and more of the characters together. The overall opinion of our video is that it was good so far and we had comments like we were "very cute" and it is "very well produced, fantastic editing"

The Treatment

Our music title focus with the main lyric of the song "SuperHero" this is also the name of the song so we decided to keep the music video simple and go with the same idea. The time for the music video is 3:34 this is a long enough time to get a good amount of footage and story line in the video. We have decided to create a story line that also is in comparison to the lyrics of the song. The story line is a romantic love story with two characters, that by coinsodence bump into each other and begin to chat. They soon fall in love and he becomes her "super hero", this then ends tragically as the male dies in a car accident saving the female, a dramatic and sad ending that should have a high impact of the audience.

The music video is set in post modern society and is a story anyone can relate to giving it a large target audience, the beginning of the story line will have long takes and many straight cuts keeping the video simplistic, showing many clips of performance and scenes from the story line to show the romance and connection between the two characters. This will then be impacted by the hit of the chorus which followed up by the short takes and a series of effects to back create a climax.

We will be using the iMac to edit and cut our video using a program called Final Cut Express, we have experience using this program from last year so we have a good idea on using it, this means we can use our time efficently and be a lot more creative with the editing of the music video.

The style of the music video is R&B so we have to dress and use props that follow or co-inside with the genre. We have influences from artists such as 'Beyonce' and 'Rhianna' as they are both artist which in their videos show alot of romance between a male and female character a good example is Beyonce's 'Halo' However, due to our own storyline we have originality. We can express the love and connection between the two characters through the dynamic use of camera shots such as long and short shots, close ups and symbolic shots.  In the video we have decided to use effects such as fades in and outs as well as flashbacks and slow motion for items such as the car accident.

We decided our location on scene that represented specific areas where the characters could be together. In comparison we also found places that the female character could be alone and look vulnerable. We came across the idea of a love story moving into a sad car crash that shows the male saving the female this relates to the title of the song 'superhero'. I fill it will give an impact on the audience especially as the car crash could be seen as unexpected.
